... [+]This past Saturday, long-time PepsiCo CEO Donald Kendall passed away at the age of 99. Kendall, who helmed the soft drinks giant for 23 years from 1963 to 1986, is best known for transforming the New York-based company into the primary competitor of Coca-Cola. Under his leadership, Pepsi would merge with snack-maker Lay’s, move from offices in Manhattan to a suburban campus in Purchase, New York, break into the Soviet market—and make a load of money.

His rise at PepsiCo is the stuff of corporate Americana mythology: Born on a dairy farm in rural Washington in 1921, Kendall earned two Distinguished Flying Crosses while serving in the Navy in World War II before landing a job on the bottling line at PepsiCo in 1947. After an illustrious career in sales, Kendall was named president of PepsiCo International in 1957. By 1963 he was CEO.

"Our big job is to make this a very profitable company, whether we watch the guy ahead of us or the guy behind," Kendall toldAnd grow he did. Shortly after taking over operations, Kendall shook up the company’s structure, merging its global and domestic operations and restructuring the company around 12 “profit centers,” each with a geographic head reporting to him.
