Hospitality bossses fear January will be an even bleaker month than normal
will make what is ordinarily a difficult month for pubs and restaurants even tougher, businesses have said.
Members of the RMT union will continue industrial action on Saturday, following walkouts on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The fresh strikes staged by rail workerscome in the wake of December’s walkouts, which brought the nation to a standstill in the run-up to Christmas. Hospitality businesses say the previous action prompted many customers to cancel their plans to eat and drink out, including calling off Christmas parties, which hit their profits. Now they fear January will be an even bleaker month than normal, with customers and staff unable to get out, and consumers also grappling with the cost of living crisis and depleted post-Christmas household budgets.
Ms Nicholls described the situation as “unsustainable” and claimed it added another “entirely avoidable” pressure for businesses to contend with, “on top of soaring energy costs, workforce challenges and dampening consumer confidence”. She added: “It’s essential that all parties involved in the negotiations reach a solution imminently to avoid these harmful strikes that continue to hit hospitality.”
