Croatia beat the soccer giant of Brazil and is preparing to battle Argentina on Tuesday, Dec. 13.
A mass of patriotic revelers gathered at the Croatian American Club on Friday, Dec. 9, to watch their national team upset soccer superpower Brazil in the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.Croatian supporters are expected back at the San Pedro community center in even greater numbers on Tuesday, Dec. 13, when their team takes on Argentina in the semifinals — and tries to make their second consecutive World Cup final.
San Pedro has a large Croatian population. The community arrived in the historic port town from their native Croatia, which in on the Adriatic Sea, generations ago. The first Croatian Americans in San Pedro worked in the fishing and canning industries. The community then branched out into the building trades and professions.
The World Cup’s first quarterfinal on Friday was a nail-biter, with Brazil scoring the match’s first goal in extra time. But Croatia kept fighting and soon responded with an equalizer, sending the match to penalty kicks.“The atmosphere in the hall was tense,” said Niko Skoblar, a Croatian American Club board member. “We were all on pins and needles watching the game, but when we scored the tying goal in extra time and then won the game on penalty kicks, it was pure jubilation.
Croatia, though an incredibly skilled team, was the underdog going into the match against Brazil, ranked no. 1 in the world and winners of a record five World Cups. Only eight countries have won the men’s World Cup — and Croatia isn’t one of them. “Croatia’s success is huge,” Frane Jerkovic, board president for the Croatian American Club, said of the team’s upset. “We are a small country, but we’re so proud that we can compete and beat the big boys like Brazil.”During the 2018 World Cup, in Russia, the team made a storybook run to the finals before losing to France.
