Many farmers in Saskatchewan have found themselves in a bind where oil companies can continue to access their land but no longer pay up.
Energy Minister Bronwyn Eyre said recently that consultations with landowners and industry will begin later this month after the province paused legislative changes in 2014.
“In a lot of cases, oil companies are sending letters to farmers saying, ‘Yeah, times are tough, we’re only going to pay you half,’” said Scott Owens, who farms near Maidstone and is the vice-president with the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan. When he wasn’t receiving payments, Owens said it was a tough pill to swallow, especially when the land could be farmed.
The legislation that addresses payment issues and surface rights generally hasn’t been changed in more than 50 years.
