Sean Dyche has gone on record in the past to express his admiration of Kalvin Phillips, who Everton would like to sign on loan from Manchester City
If you think Everton's squad was on the light side this season, a quick glance at how it currently looks will give you a reminder of just how big a job Sean Dyche and Kevin Thelwell have on their hands this summer.
Gomes, somewhat surprisingly, became an important player for Everton this season and while the centre of midfield is an area in which the squad is well stocked - compared to other parts at least - the uncertainty over the future of Amadou Onana means Dyche and director of football Thelwell may well have to boost the ranks in that part of the pitch to support Gueye, James Garner and Abdoulaye Doucoure, who is now more effective further forward.
It was not so long ago that Phillips was one of the hottest properties in the English game. A key player for England on their way to the Euro 2020 final, the Leeds United man was being tracked by all the top clubs. Eventually, in the summer of 2022, City swooped, paying an initial £42m fee for Phillips' services.
But while Dyche has not spoken publicly on the matter, past comments prove that he is a confirmed admirer of Phillips. Revealing he tried to sign the player in 2019 when he was manager of Burnley, Dyche said of Phillips in 2021: "I thought he was a very good player then and he’s a very good player now. He’s developed since then and continues to do so, so fair play to him.
