He played every position except pitcher and catcher — and even played multiple positions in six games, with his most time coming in center field and at second base.
TEMPE, Ariz. — With roster decisions looming at the end of their bench, Giants added to their flexibility and versatility in a trade Sunday with the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Giants acquired 24-year-old utility man Luke Williams in exchange for 27-year-old infielder Will Toffey and cash and added him to their 40-man roster, creating room by moving left-hander Matthew Boyd to the 60-day injured list. In Williams, the Giants get a player with multiple option years left, who made his major league debut last season and in 52 games made appearances at every position but pitcher and catcher. Those qualities could open opportunities for Williams in San Francisco.
The Giants have utilized players such as Thairo Estrada and Mauricio Dubon in similar roles, but both lack options and thus would have to pass through waivers in order to be sent to the minors, with the Giants expected to continue their caravan between Oracle Park and Sacramento. Other utility players such as Alex Blandino and Jason Krizan would have to be added to the 40-man roster.
Williams gives the Giants a more reliable option in the outfield than Krizan or Jason Vosler, who went back and forth between San Francisco and Sacramento more than any other Giants player last season but primarily played the infield.
