The former Linfield striker is hoping to make a mark with Northern Ireland in the UEFA Nations League
Windsor Park evokes positive memories for Shayne Lavery, and he hopes that feel-good factor continues on Thursday night when Northern Ireland take on Luxembourg in the Nations League. It was on a mild summer's evening on August 22, 2019 that the striker scored a superb solo effort for Linfield against Qarabag in the Europa League play-off round.
"I didn't realise that goal was five years ago. I couldn't believe that. It was an unbelievable night," he recalls. Linfield came agonisingly close to reaching the group stages five years ago, and also lost out in another play-off two years ago against Latvian side RFS, this time penalties determined their fate.
"The European thing is massive for that. The lads over in England and Scotland see that. They see an opportunity to play European football. You won't get those European nights in the Championship or League One."
