One business owner in the Nottinghamshire town said she only made £3.75 one day
Business owners in a Nottinghamshire town say they are "screwed" after the closure of a Wilko store led to a dramatic drop in the number of customers. Shops in Carlton recorded downturns in revenue of up to 30 per cent since the famous old retailer collapsed.
Ms Needham said she was already "just about" covering costs after her electricity bills increased from £750 to £3,800 a month last year. "The way this is going, if someone doesn't take over we're probably screwed," she said. "I don't want to leave but I can't make ends meet. The shopping centre looks so drab. When Wilko was open you'd get new people come in but I don't get that now.
Director of policy and insight Chris Hobson said: “Given the huge presence it has had across numerous retail environments over many decades, it was always a concern the loss of Wilko would have a negative knock-on effect for surrounding businesses.
