Black rhinos are critically endangered, and births in captivity are relatively rare. The species' population grew by one this Christmas Eve.
LANSING, Mich. – The black rhino population in the U.S. grew by one Tuesday morning with the arrival of a baby boy at the Potter Park Zoo in Lansing, Michigan.
"For a first-time mom, she went through labor and delivery much faster than we anticipated," Fountain said."She did really, really well, and the baby did well, too."He is the first black rhino to be born at Potter Park Zoo, which is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and participates in the AZA's Species Survival Plan.
The arrival of their calf was tough to predict because gestation ranges from 15 to 17 months in black rhinos, zoo officials said. "She did great," Fountain said."Doppsee is a very personable animal. She's very friendly and loves attention from her keepers and visitors. So while we weren't completely surprised, we were happy to see that she was still amenable ."
