“It’s kinda like a dream come true to come back here and play one more time.”
MESA, Ariz. — Stephen Vogt is back in with the franchise and place where his career blossomed and he became a two-time all-star catcher.
“This is where my family grew up, as Oakland A’s,” Vogt said. “I established myself as a major leaguer in Oakland. We had some really special moments in my five years in Oakland, including two playoff runs. It’s kinda like a dream come true to come back here and play one more time.” A’s manager Mark Kotsay was a coach with the A’s starting in 2015 and overlapped with Vogt up until the final day he wore the green and gold. So the new manager knows first-hand what Vogt brings on and off the field.
Oakland designated him for assignment the next day, and his career wound through stops in Milwaukee for two seasons, San Francisco for one and Arizona for one and a half years. But a mid-July trade last year sent him to Atlanta, where he was able to add another milestone to his resume: World Series champion.
The catching spot on the 2022 A’s seems set from the outside, with Sean Murphy considered one of the best in baseball — including in Vogt’s mind, too. Kotsay said that Murphy could catch all 162 games if he wanted to, but will need to manage his workload to elongate his career. It helps to have a left-handed hitting catcher to platoon Murphy when the A’s want to get him rest, and can do so against tough right-handed pitchers.
