Tom O'Driscoll donated his kidney and liver to strangers. He hopes his story will inspire others to donate.

“Being quiet about it would probably be my preference,” he said. “But being an advocate, to me, is something that I hope will benefit someone else.”people waiting for live-saving transplants in the United States alone, according to the federal Health Resources and Services Administration. Nearly 89,000 are waiting for a kidney, and more than 10,000 are waiting for a liver.

Raising awareness was the goal of the Mount Kilimanjaro expedition, said Bobby McLaughlin, a Seattle resident and kidney donor who is the climb coordinator for Living Donor Adventures. McLaughlin is part of a smaller group that is continuing the nonprofit’s work this month by taking part in a three-week trek at the Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal. The group is also planning a return to Mount Kilimanjaro next year.

“I see on Chaya’s web page that she’s talking about kidney and liver matches,” he said. “And I’m thinking ‘Huh. How do you donate a liver? You can’t live without a liver.”a few months after a transplant. O’Driscoll was in very good shape, and he prepared by training the way he would before an Ironman. But he hadn’t trained at an altitude since he was in U.S. Army Ranger School decades ago.
