A national charity said 'it's absolutely bonkers and a totally backwards step'
Tesco has initiated a cash-free policy at 40 of its cafes, with the supermarket giant claiming that it will cut customer wait times and improve their overall experience.
Recent figures published by banking industry trade body UK Finance found the number of payments made using notes and coins fell by 7 percent in 2023 compared to the year. At the same time, it found that 40 percent of people – mainly under 24s - now effectively live a cashless life and rely on cards and smartphone apps, such as Apple Pay
"Elderly people go to these places for chit-chat, to talk about the weather and about what's happening in their lives. It might only be a few minutes of the day, but that is a very valuable conversation." Another unhappy customer recounted their experience at a Broadstairs Tesco cafe: "This has just been renovated and I came here to do shopping but first wanted to sit down with a coffee. I couldn't do that because they don't accept cash or Tesco gift cards as payment."
