Quarterback Quinn Ewers had a rocky debut season at Texas. But with spring practice halfway done, coach Steve Sarkisian likes what he's seeing from Ewers in his second offseason with the Longhorns.

And after Texas fell to 2-2 with an overtime loss at Texas Tech, this notion took hold that the Longhorns would have been 4-0 – and possibly ranked No. 1 in the nation – had Ewers just avoided that injury. Then, over the Longhorns’ last handful of regular-season games, the daily hosannas started to fade. Ewers completed just 50 percent of his passes for 988 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions during that stretch as coach Steve Sarkisian leaned more on his overpowering backfield.
“That’s part of football. That’s how this works, especially under coach Sark,” Ewers said last November. “And yeah, for sure. I’m ready for any sort of competition.”About three weeks removed from his 20th birthday, the redshirt sophomore has a vise grip on the starting job amid these offseason trials with redshirt freshman Maalik Murphy and top-ranked true freshman Arch Manning running a distant second and third, respectively.
