Scientists have discovered that sleep is not a period of physical and mental inactivity, but rather a time when the body and brain perform essential functions for overall health. There are two main types of sleep, REM and non-REM, which play different roles in the sleep cycle. During non-REM sleep, the brain becomes less responsive to the outside world and the body slows down. In the REM stage, dreaming occurs and certain bodily functions increase to daytime levels.
