How does the concept and awareness of informed consent play into the high-stress environment of a delivery room?
Before anything goes down, ask if this is even medically indicated. Sometimes there’s no medical indication for procedures that are done to us. Often, the only answer is your doctor said so. That is not an answer. When you start asking questions, if your medical professionals are apprehensive, uncomfortable, or have an attitude, that should say something. If they’re aggressive with you and you’re asking questions about your care and things they are going to do to your body, that’s a problem.
I’ve had people have success because they were able to speak, and they gained that ability through practice. This an iterative, educational process that is something that we have to work on a lot, because we have been indoctrinated to revere doctors as people of authority, just like we do police.
