Review: HBO’s documentary 'The Weight of Gold' examines the pressures and mental health issues that often affect Olympic athletes
As a world-class freestyle skier, Jeremy Bloom didn’t win a lot of love when he failed to medal at the 2002 Olympics.
But he’ll make friends with one of the more welcome statements in “The Weight of Gold,” a documentary about the mental health of Olympic athletes: “People,” he says, “have bigger problems.” He’s not belittling anyone, or the point of the film. But given the bitterness and self-absorption displayed by some of its subjects, what he says needs to be said, if only so the more enlightening aspects of the story can shine through.
