“I like the idea that this story reads like a fairy tale, but there is no moral at all.”
Your story in this week’s issue, “The Big Cat,” involves a family of women who snore. Have you ever known a family like this one? No, I’ve never known an entire family of women who snored. As a junior in high school, however, I was given an American Legion scholarship to attend a camp in the North Dakota Peace Garden. I didn’t realize that the camp was run by the John Birch Society and other members of right-wing groups.
I decided to give in to her perhaps unconscious malevolence, and after many revisions I wrote the ending. I was genuinely disturbed by this ending and have no idea how to account for it—except perhaps to blame it on that barracks filled with young women I shouted the Pledge of Allegiance with three times a day for a week. Do you think that Elida had a reason for structuring the birthday movie in the way that she did? There became something quite deadly in Elida.
