Federal prosecutors are demanding an ancient tablet be returned to Iraq after it was 'stolen' and put on display at the Museum of the Bible, which is funded by Hobby Lobby.
Hobby Lobby bought the Gilgamesh Dream Tablet for more than $1.6 million in 2014."This rare tablet was pillaged from Iraq and years later sold at a major auction house, with a questionable and unsupported provenance," Peter C. Fitzhugh, special agent in charge for Homeland Security Investigations in New York, said in a statement.Hobby Lobby bought the Gilgamesh Dream Tablet for more than $1.6 million in 2014.
Agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations seized the tablet last year from the Museum of the Bible, which, it said, cooperated with the investigation. Hobby Lobby's owners are the founders of the Museum of the Bible. "Whenever looted cultural property is found in this country, the United States government will do all it can to preserve heritage by returning such artifacts where they belong," Richard Donoghue, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York,.
