Water companies across England and Wales reported 29,926 sewer collapses over a six-year period

as a “structural failure” that has “not been identified proactively by the company” which impacts services to customers or thereported 7,538 sewer collapses over a six-year period – more than a quarter of the 29,926 collapses reported by 17 water companies across England and Wales.

The spokesperson added: “Water companies have proposed investing a record £105 billion to ensure the security of our water supply in the future, upgrade our sewer infrastructure and end sewage entering our rivers and seas. The statistics on sewer collapses form part of the data used by Ofwat to determine whether it would permit water companies to increase their bills last month.

“Years of underinvestment have left our infrastructure ill-equipped to deal with the challenges of a rapidly growing population and climate change. This means that compensation due in certain circumstances – such as failing to provide notice of supply interruptions or boil notices and missing arranged appointments with customers – will be doubled.
