Universal Credit fraudster who wrongly claimed £6,000 from DWP blamed stranger in a pub
Laurence Naylor claimed that a stranger he met in a pub offered to secure him a Universal Credit loan and that he assumed he would eventually be contacted by the Department of Work and Pensions about repayments. But, in reality, the money was issued in four payments of around £1,500 thanks to claims which included children who do not exist.
Each of those claims changed the names and dates of birth of the children and stated that Naylor was not working but paying out between £850 and £1,250 in rent. In truth, he was working full-time and had one child who did not live with him full time. Defending, Lesley Halliwell said: “There’s no explanation for the behaviour, there’s no justification for it.” But she said Naylor owed large drug debts and was struggling as his mother suffered with illness. She said he has now stopped using drugs and is in a healthy relationship and employed as a factory worker at India Mill in Darwen.
