We chat with LaBrea stars VeroStClair & Jack Martin, who preview Josh and Riley's relationship as they're stuck outside their own time when season 2 of the hit nbc series premieres tonight:
NBC's breakout series La Brea is back for season 2 tonight, and fans will finally have the answers to questions that have been haunting them all year. This series opened with an unforgettable scene of the La Brea Tar Pits turning into a time-traveling sinkhole that deposited the majority of its ensemble cast in 10,000 BC.
Veronica St. Clair: In season 1, there was a whole lot of talk about the light leading to 1988 in Topanga, so it is presumed and it is assumed that we are in 1988. Josh and Riley find themselves at the top of episode one, just trying to figure out where they are, when they are, and what's going on—if they are actually 1988 or not. They start on their quest to figure all those things out, and they become the little detectives that they've always thought they be.
I think he's frustrated that Riley hasn't reciprocated fully, but he thinks it's gonna work out anyway. He's not that worried about it. I think he hasn't really considered the possibility that she isn't ultimately going to also be into him, honestly By the end of season 1, though, she starts to feel like maybe this was her passion all along and wants to explore that further. Being independent from her dad and being with Josh in 1988, she does get a lot of space and breadth to get to know herself better and grow up a little bit more; to see if that's really what she wants to do. But the thing about Riley is that she can do just about anything. She's a very skilled woman, so the world is her oyster.
There were some pretty big revelations made about Levi and his mom right before this, and Josh went through several years of his life thinking that his dad had abandoned the whole family and betrayed everybody's trust. While he was absent to an extent, it turns out it was really the other way around. The family kind of betrayed Gavin and didn't trust him when he needed them to; when he was right and could have prevented all this.
Veronica St. Clair: So much. I mean, this is both of our first series regular roles on a TV show. So, we were really learning how to be actors. It's such a great opportunity to get to be an actor every day for six months last year, and for nine months this year. There's so much to learn, especially on a show that is sci-fi.
