Alarmed by the dangers, parents have taken matters into their own hands. Using data students gathered with portable CO2 detectors, together with the community, parents designed their own DIY air purifiers that are affordable and effective tools in removing potentially dangerous substances, including viruses and mold, from their classrooms.
Until recently, detecting and removing microscopic airborne pollutants was difficult and it wasn’t until advances in the networks of connected devices - Internet of Things technologies - enabled the adoption of low-power, low-cost sensors to transmit accurate air quality data in a way that was actionable. The COVID-19 pandemic only brought a heightened interest in improving indoor air quality , as well as made clear that comprehensive, innovative and affordable solutions were needed.
Real-time IAQ solutions grew in popularity for schools in recent years, but also for commercial offices, medical, and entertainment venues, and are partly responsible for keeping students from coast to coast safe and where they should be: physically in the classroom. The IAQ industry itself is projected to grow globally by almostin the next few years. Companies like Attune , which I founded in 2014, have IAQ monitoring platforms in over 200 schools from California to Washington D.C.
