When I’m asked to describe myself, I’ll often times say that I’m a long-distance runner. I always get an interesting response like, “Is that what you do for a living?” Some people start to run in high school, but others start when they are in their sixties. The beauty of the sport is that you can start at any time, assuming you are healthy and motivated. All it takes is the curiosity. Ask a friend to join you or just go out on a local trail and meet other runners.
Like many runners, if I go three days without a run, I feel cranky and overweight and unhappy. Even if I’m feeling tired or unmotivated, I know that once I get out there, I’ll feel euphoric. It’s my natural therapy and way to relax. It helps me make decisions, overcome disappointments, and build dreams for the future. It’s also my own connection to spirituality, as I take in the beauty of trees and parks and lakes, always in awe of God’s creation.
