The rate of population growth, though, continues a long-term slowdown
The human population of Earth has topped 8 billion, with longer lifespans offsetting fewer births, but world population growth continues a long-term trend of slowing down, the U.S. Census Bureau said Thursday.
“The minimum number of births necessary to replace both the father and mother for neutral world population is 2.1, demographers say. Almost three-quarters of people now live in countries with fertility rates around or below that level.” Also: India is now the world’s most populous country. But this demographic metric is more important for its economy.
