Yik Yak, a local, anonymous app that was most popular on college campuses during the early 2010’s, returned to Apple’s App Store Monday for U.S. users, four years after the platform shut down in 2017 after its user base declined.Yik Yak allows users to post anonymous messages to local boards that other users within a five-mile radius can comment on and upvote and downvote to increase or decrease a post’s visibility.

The new version of Yik Yak appears much the same as the app did four years ago, with the addition of a long list of new “” meant to combat the bullying and hate speech that plagued the previous version of the platform, which ran with little moderation. The platform encourages users to both downvote and report any Yik Yak posts that violate the terms, as any post on Yik Yak that has reached -5 votes will be automatically removed and reported posts are reviewed.
