of the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency Act. Signed into law on August 18, 1990, this landmark legislation created the largest federal program focused exclusively on providing care and treatment to people with HIV, called the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program.
"The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program has been a cornerstone of the public health response to HIV in the United States for the last three decades," said HHS Secretary Alex Azar."What was once a deadly disease is now a manageable chronic condition, and we see that in the success of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, with the vast majority of its clients reaching viral suppression.
The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program provides care and treatment services to low-income people with HIV—who are among the hardest to reach populations. The program serves approximately half of all Americans diagnosed with HIV in the United States. In 2018, approximately 87.1 percent of Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program clients who received HIV medical care were virally suppressed, up from 69.5 percent in 2010.
