The North Western Hotel has been through many changes
The North Western Hotel on Lime Street was completed in 1871, and the building was opened as a hotel by the London and North Western Railway to serve Lime Street station. Originally, there were concerns the architect in charge would design something so grand it would outshine St George’s Hall.
It was constructed in stone with a slate roof in the Renaissance Revival style reminiscent of a French château. A prominent feature of the building are the two towers in the middle, similar to those in Tower Bridge. In 1952, the building was declared a Grade II listed building by Historic England and in 1994, it was bought by John Moores University and converted into a hall of residence with accommodation for 250 students, opening in 1996.
