Nestled in a gorgeous country park on the edge of the Peak District, a visit to this cave is the perfect day out from Greater Manchester
On the edge of Buxton lies a surreal subterranean world. It’s a place where sunlight never reaches, strange formations hang from the ceiling and the temperature remains a constant 7C.
READ MORE: Gorgeous Greater Manchester village has a river running through it, lovely walks, great pubs and top chippy One thing you can’t ignore are the caves' impressive stalagmites, which protrude from the ground, and stalactites, which hang down over your head. The bizarrely named Flitch of Bacon is the cavern’s most famous one and it appears to defy gravity as it hangs suspended over the cave floor .
At this point of the tour the guide allows you to experience how dark the cavern actually is as the lights are briefly turned off. It’s incredibly surreal as you’re submerged in pitch black darkness, and makes you feel very grateful for electric light bulbs. Emerging back into daylight, it's hard to believe what you've just experienced as it becomes hidden underground once more.
