When Keith Haggis opened his now famous wine bar in Aigburth in 1978, the city was a very different place
Imagine a Lark Lane , or a Liverpool for that matter, without Keith's. The Aigburth wine bar came to the city at a time of decline and dereliction when the only places to eat and drink were old Victorian pubs and greasy spoon cafes.
It was a second-hand clothes shop with a ‘for sale’ sign outside. My brother said: ‘That’d be the perfect place for a bar.’ 'So we looked into it and ended up buying it - not that we really had any money. Our beloved grandfather had recently died and he’d left us some money which we pulled together and it was enough to buy here. We were both still in university but my brother was really adamant about going for it.
