The 12.5% unemployment rate among millennials is higher than that of Generation X and baby boomers, according to May figures from the Pew Research Center. Their tendency to work at lower-paying firms has also caused millennials to lag behind in earnings. Even the most educated millennials are employed at lower rates than older college graduates.
3. Millennials are at risk of falling further behind because they entered the pandemic in a weaker position than older Americans. Because millennials graduated during the previous recession, economists are worried that the scars of that financial crisis have yet to heal now that the economy is struggling during the pandemic.
