True Harvest Seeds CEO Debbie Gillies learned her craft at Kew Gardens, where 2.4 billion seeds from over 39,000 worldwide species are stored in the Millennium Seed Bank
A Co Down charity is trying to stop increasingly rare Irish plants dying out by preserving them in their seed bank.
But right here in Northern Ireland, Debbie is trying to protect native Irish species for the generations to come. We headed along to their facility on Ardglass Road, Kilclief to learn all about the plant conservation charity. She says Trust Harvest Seeds' "core purpose is to create a seed bank of Ireland’s native flora".
“I’ve got corncockle, which is lovely, I bred it a couple of years ago. I’ve got cornflower, which used to be native in Ireland. But a lot of the cornfield annuals got eradicated because farming practices got better and were able to destroy them. “It’s just a really bad idea to plant something that if it gets away will create a real problem,” she explained. “Things like primulas - little coloured primroses you can buy in shopping centres - they interbreed with our native ones. By and large when you see them, they are hybridised with our native ones.
Debbie started out growing organic vegetable with two friends before meeting Mark Bryson from Eco Seeds, then working in a wildflower nursery, which inspired her to get into seed conservation.
