Senate State Government Committee Chairman Cris Dush, R-Jefferson County, visited a PennDOT service center to get a first-hand look at the automatic voter registration system implemented three weeks ago. Josh Shapiro’s decision to switch automatic voter registration isn’t sitting well with the chairman of the Senate State Government Committee.
Shapiro announced the switch to automatic voter registration on Sept. 19. He said it would enhance accuracy and security of the state’s voter rolls while saving taxpayer’s time and money. Further, he said automatic voter registration reduces the processing burden on county election officials and streamlines the registration process.
The wording used, the order questions appeared and prompts that moved individuals to the next screen were among a number of concerns that the senator, his committee’s counsel and executive director David Burnett and others raised. The secretary, however, shared the senator’s concern over the use of the word “cancel” on a screen when a person decides against proceeding with applying for or updating a voter registration.
Dush suggested switching those screens around so that the voter can decide whether they want to receive those texts before providing their phone number. Schmidt said a voter could visit or call the county voter registration office to have their phone number removed from the public record.
