A plane crash on the Matanuska River near Chickaloon yesterday left one pilot dead, after occupants of another aircraft told Alaska State Troopers they saw the plane hit a cable and crash into the river.
Troopers first heard of the crash, near Mile 77 of the Glenn Highway, just before 1 p.m. according to an online dispatch. The Matanuska Dive Team and a towing company responded, and were able to remove the plane from the river. The pilot’s body was turned over to a funeral home.
The occupants of another aircraft flying with the plane told troopers they saw the plane hit a cable and crash. The deceased pilot was the only person aboard the crashed plane. He hasn’t yet been named as troopers notify his family. The National Transportation Safety Board identified the crashed plane Thursday as a Piper PA-18. Clint Johnson, the NTSB’s Alaska chief, said an investigator was sent to the scene.
