Katie Buchanan, from Edinburgh, sought medical advice after she suffered from severe pain, vaginal bleeding for several months.

A young woman told was told she had terminal cervical cancer that had spread to her lungs - two years before she was due her first smear test.

She says the hardest part of her diagnosis is watching all of her friends reach their life milestone while she has to come to terms with leaving her mother behind to grieve. The young artist is urging women under the age of 25 to go for a smear test if they suspect anything may be wrong - insisting if she had taken the test earlier, it may have saved her life.

“It was extremely embarrassing getting on a bus full of people or being near anyone including my boyfriend at the time. I was also unable to leave my house a lot of the time or do anything outside because I was in excruciating pain which left me screaming all day every day. Katie was the forced to endure an agonising wait for a biopsy to be carried out. She said: I can’t remember how long I had to wait to hear those results but it felt like a lifetime. I was admitted to hospital with extreme bleeding and huge clots before I was due to hear them.

I’m now just doing immunotherapy which is going to prolong my life as much as we can. I don’t plan to do chemo again when it starts to grow bigger as I can't put myself through that again. The chemo I was doing was just way too hard on me both mentally and physically.
